In the early stages of your career, it can be tempting to hold out for those high-profile projects that promise reputation, recognition and rapid advancement. However, I’ve found that there’s a huge benefit to sticking your hand up and taking on a variety of smaller tasks that any team constantly needs to complete and doing them really well.
They may seem less glamourous, but these kinds of tasks can be the building blocks of your career and hold out too long for that big project and you’ll miss out on learning a wealth of skills. Not only do these smaller tasks expose you to different areas of the business but they allow you to build a reputation for reliability and competence.
Ultimately, this all prepares you for the time when there is a big project, and you will be first in line to take it on because you have already proven your capability time and again.
